Working From Home as a Virtual Assistant

The common use of the internet for business purposes and the ease of communication via technological innovations, like fax and email, have brought about a new profession, that of a virtual assistant. Similar to a secretary, receptionist, or an administrative assistant, a virtual assistant helps small business owners manage their administrative operations, but they work from their home rather than in the office.

The responsibilities of a virtual assistant vary from one client to another and can be rather widespread. Some basic duties include filing, project management, scheduling meetings and securing travel arrangements, and
other clerical work. A virtual assistant may also conduct research, write proposals, make appointments, send newsletters, or even update websites. Billing, bookkeeping, data entry, or transcription services may also be performed.

A number of small businesses are employing the services of a virtual assistant rather than a traditional secretary or assistant. Virtual assistants are great for businesses that can't support a full time staff member but need help with their administrative tasks. A virtual assistant doesn't require any extra office space and can work only the hours needed by each client so it is a more affordable expense than a full time administrative assistance.

A lot of those in traditional administrative positions are making the change to virtual assisting. Working as a virtual assistant allows you to create your own schedule and puts you in control of your life. You can still enjoy the career you love while always being there for your family as well.

Because virtual assisting is a small business in itself, a virtual assistant must advertise their services and develop relationships with other small business owners that could benefit from their service. With today's available technologies, it is possible to work for many clients in several different locations all at once and from the comfort of home.

Working as a virtual assistant means you can set your own hours and work at your own pace. You may choose to make yourself readily available to your clients and handle their tasks on an as needed basis, or you may work out a schedule to meet one or several clients' needs.

Virtual assistants can earn a nice income working from home. The average hourly rate is between $20 and $45, while those with more specialized skills can earn up to $100 an hour. The pay scale depends on the amount of experience you have in the field.

If you aren't already experienced as an administrative assistance, training is available through a few different organizations. The International Virtual Assistance Association offers an official certification, or you can enroll in courses at a site like AssistU. Then, there are several websites available that will help you find a business in need of your skills.

Your success as a virtual assistant will depend on the time and commitment you are willing to put into your work. Many small businesses take three to five years to become profitable, but with patience and dedication you can build a successful home business as a virtual assistant.
