Juggling Home Commitments With Home Office CommitmentsFinding the right balance between home and work can be a struggle. It seems that you give everything at work to please your boss and then have to come home and do it all for your family. Things are especially difficulty for those returning to work after a long absence. Trying to devote time to everything leaves many men and women tired, worn out and frustrated. This article takes a look at ways to juggle your home commitments with work. Here is a look especially at those cases where one parent has returned to work after a long absence.
Before juggling the commitments, you must first decide if it is even worth it to return to work. You should look
realistically at what you can expect to earn and weight that against expenses such as day care, wardrobe and lunches out. If youre not bringing home significantly more money then chances are it may not be worth returning to work at this time. You may want to wait until you children are older or you can command a better income.
If you are certain you want to return to work, you then need to consider the type of job. Perhaps returning to your old job isnt practical due to hours or salary. You may want to find a job that offers flexible hours even if the pay is less. Remember, if it saves you money on day care it could add up to more money in your pocket. You may also want to search for employment in places that offer onsite day care. More and more companies are using this as an employee benefit. Absenteeism goes down and worker productivity goes up when schemes such as this are implemented. Finding a position in one of these companies could save you money and make the transition easier on you and your children.
If you decide to return to your old position, full-time with similar hours, then you will likely need to organize some form of day care. Many parents get nervous about leaving their child all day and get guilt tripped into returning home. Studies show that children who spend large amounts of time in day care do not suffer any developmental or psychological damage as long as the care is good. Less concern should be paid to the amount of time in care and more to the quality of care given. Day care centers should be thoroughly researched before chosen. A day care center isnt the only option either. A good quality babysitter can also offer as good of a level of care for you child. It may also be much more economical in the long run.
Returning to work and managing a family is a large task. However, it is manageable. Try to get other family members to chip in with the daily chores of the house. There is no reason that you should have to manage everything on your own. Even the very young children can help out by picking up toys and keeping their rooms tidy. If the children are slightly older, they can do more complex things. Offer them an allowance for work that they do. This will take some of the burden off of you and help teach your children responsibility. It will also allow more time for you to spend with them when you get home.
Returning to work after a long absence is a big decision. If you have decided that it is definitely worth it, then use the advice in this article. Look for good quality day care and ask for help from other family members. If everyone helps out, youll see how manageable everything is. |
