The Pros and Cons of Working From HomeMore and more people are starting their own home based businesses, but just as many still continue to work for someone else. There are plenty of advantages, as well as disadvantages, to each.
Many employers provide support and training in the workplace. If you work for someone else, you can gain more experience and still have someone beside you to answer questions and help to meet important deadlines. You may also receive valuable advice for dealing with stressful situations, like customer complaints, while working for someone else.
On the other hand, some employers create more stress for those who
work for them. Many people who decide to start their own business do so because they are not appreciated at their current job. Some employers are critical, not taking the time to listen to their employees.
Another downfall of working for someone else is the typical commute time each day. The time spent driving back and forth to work takes time away from your family and can be hard on your car as well. Working for someone else also means adhering to a strict schedule, usually with only one or two days off each week, and only restricted times for vacationing or other time off.
Being your own boss working from home can be quite satisfying. You can set your own hours and take time off for your family whenever you need to. You save money on gas and car maintenance and have little worries of being late to the office. There are also less distractions from noisy phones or talkative colleagues.
Running your own home based business also means you will finally see the profits from all your hard work. Many times, people spend many long hours and extra efforts making money for someone else to enjoy. If you work for yourself, you can enjoy all the earnings brought about by your time and commitment.
There are just as many disadvantages to working for yourself from home, though. First, you are responsible for all the costs associated with your business, as well as the purchase and upkeep of any equipment. You also have to keep your own records, file and pay your own taxes, and secure your own medical insurance, which can be a hefty expense.
If you work for yourself, you are responsible for most of your business operations. There is little support if you encounter problems and you typically have to deal with complaints and distressed customers as well as your other responsibilities. There could be added distractions at home too, especially if you have children in the home or loud pets.
Many people choose to begin their home based business while they are working for someone else, sot of experiencing the best of both worlds. This way they can enjoy the benefits of a stable income and still enjoy the freedom of working for themselves. Working part time for an employer and investing the rest of your time in your home business is a great way to get started without the stress of depending solely on your new source of income. Once you are comfortable working for yourself, you can quit your job and commit fully to your own home business. |
